“After retiring, I picked up a pen and began to scribble. I wanted to be an official, yet disliked officials; wanted to make a fortune, yet disliked doing business; wanted to become famous, yet lacked formal education.”

HIS OWN ACCOUNT

Ye Guozhi: A Life in His Own Account

Ye Guozhi was born in Taishan, Guangdong, in 1933 and moved to Burma at the age of six. He lived through the Japanese invasion and wartime displacement, then studied at the Rangoon Overseas Chinese Middle School and Nanyang Middle School after the war.

In 1949, he returned to China and joined the military. After leaving military service, he worked in factories and learned each trade as he went—as an instrument technician, glass worker, and cement worker. Following China’s Reform and Opening, he immigrated to the United States and experienced life at the lowest rungs of the capitalist economy.

In retirement, he wrote essays, memoirs, poetry, and short fiction about ordinary lives amid the transformations of the twentieth century. Ye Guozhi died on March 27, 2022.

His work and life also survive beyond the family archive in newspapers, Burmese Chinese community websites, and literary records. The archive preserves these separately as external publications and documentary sources, distinguishing the publication of his own work from independent accounts written by others.

WHY THIS ARCHIVE EXISTS

This is not about sealing away the past.
It is about allowing a lived experience to keep speaking.

PRESERVATION METHOD

Preservation Method

What the method protects

The verified Chinese transcription is canonical and is never silently rewritten. English translations remain a clearly identified access layer; family memories, captions, and editorial additions retain their own attribution. External publications and independent biographical evidence are recorded separately, while uncertain dates, identities, titles, and work boundaries remain uncertain rather than being filled with plausible invention.

Stable URLs, canonical entity identifiers, and structured data connect the author, works, translations, photographs, family memories, and sources so that people, search engines, and future AI systems can still distinguish who wrote what—and what was added later.
