An Eagle in the Southern Land
Wang Pengnian, a young teacher at Nanyang Middle School in Burma, was from Yunnan and graduated from the English Department of Yunnan University. He once translated English news cables for the People’s Daily in Rangoon. On the eve of the founding of the People’s Republic, he joined the Yunnan Borderland Column led by Zhu Jiabi. Tragically, he was ambushed by the enemy and died a heroic death.
You were like an eagle soaring with great ambition,
for the birth of the Republic,
you were ambushed in the darkness before dawn,
your blood fell upon the wilderness of the frontier,
and with your life you bought the sound of roosters
calling in the mountain villages of Ximeng.
You have been gone for nearly half a century.
No one speaks anymore of your name or your story,
like a shooting star that once lit the eve of dawn.
Today,
in a distant foreign land,
I draw a few lines of verse from my heart,
like a burning red candle offered from afar.
Honored teacher, can you understand my sincerity?
Today,
how many people follow the path you left,
and together with the Republic,
move from victory to victory!
There are no tears, and no need to weep,
for the eagles who came after you
have even stronger wings.
